I know I must not be the only one with an antiquated ugly fireplace, nor the only wife out there whose sensibilities are offended by such brick and ugly grilles covering gaping dark voids, and who long for relief, but whose pocketbooks "just say no!" to the solutions being advertised out there in the contractor jungle. However, what exacerbated my revulsion was the heatilator vents which prominently violated my sense of composure; And since my search online just led to neat-looking massive expenditures, I went looking into how to apply what I learned from my search to design my own solution, which fit my own tastes and which truly did not strain my budget. Now the only difference between me and another victim of ancient ugly fireplaces is possibly my tool collection (husband's really), however even buying all these, your fireplace can cost much less than what contractors will charge you, even those who pretend to be do-it-yourself websites. Now, I wasn't born knowing everything, first I had to find out what the heck those gaping maws around my fireplace were and why someone had seen it fit to make them. I found out that these are called "heatilator vents" and that they vent the heat which my metal firebox within my brick hearth accumulated, to perhaps increase the transfer of the heat produced to the room. So when I looked into the cosmetic solutions offered online for my problem [i.e. http://www.accentbuildingproducts.com, and http://www.mantelsdirect.com for example] I noticed none dealt with these vents. So my first question was, is it safe for me to cover these vents up with my refacing of this project without any outlets? I first went to the people I felt most likely to be able to answer my question. I contacted the officers of the Chimney Safety Institute of America and gladly I learned that they offer a free estimate to inspect a fireplace. The officer who came by, looked up and down and criticized my firebox and brick size and then wanted $6,000 to update my fireplace, twice the cost from those other online mantels-so-called-custom made. And so, my husband convinced me that "we" (family members) were able to do an even better job, and so I trusted him, recruited my family and we decided to DIY. Praise Yahweh for blessing me with such individuals, a $300.00 budget, AND a refacing-design-idea. In three weeks we were able to give this old brick fireplace an updated makeover.
